Norma was delighted by the addition of her great grandsons, Cameron Malone and Robert Bruce Stokes. She was adored by her 10 surviving grandchildren, Maria, Brandon, Annie and Amanda Herald Chase, Jacquelynn and Stone Barli Michelle Malone, Jared (Maria) Stokes and Damon Barli. (Christi) Barli and Paul Roy (Linda) Barli. Norma is survived by her five children, Sara Barli (Bing) Herald, John Charles Barli, Norma Lynn (Michael) Stokes, Peter R. She was predeceased by her husband of 36 years, John Barli her sister Rosemary Fernandez her brother, Ray Gavilan and her grandson Matthew Herald. Paul the Apostle Catholic Church in Spartanburg, SC and a former member of St. She had a large circle of lifelong friends and was a parishioner of St. Norma was a lifelong member of the Beta Sigma Phi service sorority and gave countless hours of service to the Kidney Foundation and a host of organizations aiding migrant workers. She was a true "Palmetto Panther," much loved by her students and served as advisor to many school clubs. After living in New York for five years, she returned to teaching in Miami, first at West Homestead Elementary and then at Miami Palmetto High School where she taught until retiring after 30 years. During that time, she met the love of her life John Barli on a blind date and they married. After graduating from Florida State University, she relocated to Miami to start her teaching career at Horace Mann Junior High School. She spent most of her childhood between Tampa, Key West and Havana. Norma attended the Academy of the Holy Name and Florida State College for Women, which became Florida State University during that time. Born in Tampa, on June 6, 1927, she was the youngest of Charles and Sara Gavilan's four children.
